Lady hermit crabI like hermit crabs. After I have seen many of them I think they are lovely. Their habit is not so much like other creatures. Some are brave. Some of them are quite shy like girls.
There are many species of them, on shore and in the sea. I happened not to be an expert in this field. So, I do not know a lot of them. But many students who are studying on this subject called me on the phone. I just hummed and hawed, hoping that they managed to find the information required. We can learn more about the hermit crab situation in Thailand then.
For this model, I met her while making a night dive at the depth of 5 meters only, at the buoy in front of Ao Chongkhad (ChongKhad Bay). My students went to practice advance diving there. I did not have much to do. So, I went down with a torch and the favourite camera in hand, swimming along after the group of students. Problem was that the students had raced away in the dark…and gone in no time.
I then swam back to the boat, just to be able to shoot up in case of emergency. The water there was only 5 meters deep. I circled around a few times thinking of going up, when I saw her walking along, being large and colourful. I swam near her, gazing. She stopped, looking up at me as if asking, “What’s up?”
Having met the object, I prepared to take photograph by going near her, looking through the viewfinder to make sure that I get a full face. Then I pushed the shutter down a few times. The soft stomach crab seemed to walk shyly away. I clicked the shutter one more time before waving good-bye. But she walked toward me. So, I spent the whole roll of film on her. This photo came out best of all, which I would like to share with you.
Our web site has run the project “Return houses to hermit crabs” twice. This project started in 1999 (when the web was not launched yet). In 2000 we worked in co-operation with the radio programme ‘Green Wave’ to send back hermit crabs’ houses. In 2001 we ran the project “Return houses with the hole to soft-body crabs”, in co-operation with THINK EARTH project and Nissan conserves Thai Sea project. We sent back their houses to Similan Islands at the end of March 2001.
We have prepared this photograph to be made into Wallpaper and e-Card. You are welcome to click.
