Longnose hawkfishI have several advisees. One of those is Mr. Anuwat Saisaeng or Te-Tee, the so called “Tee the Beach Thick-knee”. The name was dubbed when he first narrated to TalayThai team in the beginning of 2000 that there were Beach Thick-knee on the shore of Surin Island. No one believed him then. Until February 2001 we had the opportunity to really spot his Beach Thick-knee.
Tee is a skilled diver, he has accomplished more than 500 dives during these past several years. At that time he was doing his thesis on “Taxonomic Study on Fish Family Pomacentridae in Thai Coral Reefs”. His duty was diving down to see the fish. Apart from Damselfishes, he had to gaze at other fish too, since he was forced to take some photographs because I had not had time to dive any more.
His photography skill could be described as ‘lousy’ without being guilty. He spent several hundred rolls of film, obtaining a few nice shots. Actually, he was a photographer who could take so beautiful shots of birds or objects on shore that had been published many times. But when it comes to underwater photograph, he always forgets either pushing this or adjusting that.
Tee has just returned from Similan, boasting triumphantly that I should wait to see the shot he had taken, “two hawkfish swimming hand-in-hand”, which could not be found again. It made me want to really see the photo. Normally, every time he brags about it, it comes out unbearable.
This time it was like heaven approved. His photograph looks very nice, either composition or rarity of the fish (a longnose hawkfish cannot be easily found, let alone two together) or perfect background. In conclusion, this is one of very few photographs or the only photograph he has taken that is acceptable.
In order to encourage him, I have chosen this shot to publish in Talay Photo, hoping that he would continue to spend the film until he could dive down to take some photographs by himself without being told by me (who will then be lying lazily on shore).
For those of you who would like to send the photograph of hawkfish swimming hand-in-hand to any of your sweetheart, you are welcome at e-Card. Those who would like more information on hawkfish please look in Fish of The Week.
