Fish Tip

Seeing them gliding around enlivens a boat trip.

Every time we go on a boat trip out to the sea, there is one type of fish that comes up to greet us. He is the first type of fish you can see, whether you can dive or not, whether you go out to a remote island or an island near the shore. You do not even need to get wet because this type of fish will “fly” up for you to see, so that we call him “flying fish”.

Flying fish has similar characteristic to fish in Family Carangidae. The prominent difference is large and long pectoral fins looking like wings. When they swim at high speed darting up above the water and spread out their fins, they can glide along the water surface for as long as 30 meters, depending on their size and timing.

The gliding of flying fish is done when escaping from the enemy or when they are frightened. When a flying fish has noticed a mackerel chasing him, he would increase his speed and dart up the water, gliding ahead. Please note that he will not go straight ahead, but rather taking left or right curve. The chasing mackerel would not see which way the prey has gone. Even if the mackerel went straight on he would no longer find the prey anymore because he has turned away. This technique helps flying fish to escape. But this is not always the case. Some times they are eaten before they can glide.

For us, flying fish is considered color and wonder of the sea that every one can see. Just go on board a boat, you will certainly see a flying fish. I guarantee.
