Morgan Sea Gypsies

Morgan sea gypsies are minority in Andaman Sea from India to Indonesia. In monsoon season, they live in boats as their houses, then between December to April; they change to live on shores. They have no literary language, but speak in some Yawi and Thai.

They live, as they are a part of the sea, by catching shrimps and fishing by spear. They have boat-floating festival to ask the sea for forgiveness (in May). Although the world changes, they are still keeping their primitive way of life; at the same time, accepting the new way. For example, Sea gypsies’ children go to school at Ao Sai Ane, South Surin Island.

Nowadays, these sea gypsies live in a village in South Surin Island. Those who are interested in their lives and primitive traditions, please contact the park officers to ask for permission. However, Do not interfere their way of lives by giving them the money, sweets, cigarettes, or buying them shells and marine animals. If you would like to help, you may buy their hand-made things instead.
