SCUBA Diving
Around Surin islands, there are many sites for SCUBA diving, but the park has no service on SCUBA unit and air compression. Please contact a diving tour boat and bring all equipment by yourself.
Diving sites are; for example, Taksin Hunsa, the most beautiful coral reef of the islands; Macha Pa Peuan, one of the best diving spot for Night Dive in Thailand; Kalapanha Yuk (Giant Sea Fan), the largest and the most beautiful Gorgonian sea fan found in Thailand; Hin A-charn Thon (Professor Thon’s rock), diving spot of diversity, many kinds of animals found; Hin Decom, the deep underwater rock (24 meters) full of sea fans and unfamiliar animals.
Those who are interested in SCUBA diving, please inform the park officers first in case of emergency. Also the information of each diving site can be asked from the park officer.
Snorkeling
More than 90% of visitors coming to Mu Ko Surin do snorkeling activity. Wouldn’t you like to miss this good chance, would you?
Snorkeling is very easy at Surin islands, start from contacting the park officer to rent the equipment (mask, snorkel, and life jacket), practice your diving skill in the afternoon at Ao Chong Kaad, and admire more than 550 anemonefishes in the area. Then, don’t forget to reserve a long-tail boat for diving in the next morning.
When the sunlight comes, go to Ao Tao where turtles are often found, look for turtles and other marine animals. In the afternoon, change your dive site to Ao Pak Kaad where various kinds of corals and not less than 7 species of Angelfishes are found.
If you are still impressed with diving, go to Ao Jaak on the next day. Although it is faraway (about 45 minutes on boat), Corals and marine animals around here are much less disturbed by human beings. In the afternoon, you may try to go to Ao Suthep where almost all kinds of marine animals can be found even Leopard sharks. (Due to shells is their food, they are not dangerous.)
For those who would like to save the money, you may walk about 2 km. to dive at Haad Mai Ngam, where the shallow water coral reef is broad and safe. You don’t have to spend money to hire a long-tail boat.
If you are not sure about your safety or wonder where is beautiful, contact the park officers on the long-tail boat. They are all trained and well-known about the blue world. They can take care of you for your safety and enjoyment of diving trip that you will remember for the rest of your life.
Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata)
A Hawksbill turtle is one of the five marine turtles found in Thailand, and one of the eight marine turtles found over the world. Its distinct characteristic is that the tip of its beak is like a hawk’s of about 60-80 cm. long.
At present, Hawksbill turtles and other turtles in Thailand are considered threatened animals. Even though there is marine turtle hatching activity in order to let young turtles go into the sea, fishery problems decrease the number of turtles in the sea, and tourism and coastal development problems cause turtles have no place to lay eggs.
Finding a turtle in the sea is difficult, but in Mu Ko Surin, especially Ao Tao, South Surin Island, there still are Hawksbill turtles foraging around. It is the place where visitors can the most easily find a Hawksbill turtle in Thailand.
When you come to Surin islands, do not miss a chance of diving to see Hawksbill turtles. But if you find them, do not swim chasing or try to ride them. They will be startled and swim away for many days…or they may not come again any more.
“View by eyes, Admire by hearts, Leave marine turtles stay, Do not chase away them”
