Getting to Know Mu Ko Surin
In the past, Mu Ko Surin used to be a protected forest area, a petroleum concession, and used to proposed to be a Vietnamese refugee camp. However, due to its prosperous natural resources both on the land and in the sea, the Royal Forestry Department had tried to propose Mu Ko Surin as a national park. The effort was successful. It was proclaimed the 29th national park of Thailand on July 9, 1981.
Mu Ko Surin Marine National Park has the area of 135 square kilometers (84,357 Rai). 76% of its area is seawater and the less is land. Its consists of 5 islands; North Surin Island, South Surin Island, Torinla Island (Ko Raap), Pajumba Island (Ko Mungkorn), and Stork Island (Beacon Island); and 2 exposed pinnacles of Hin Pae and Hin Kong.
About 14 kilometers east of Mu Ko Surin is located an underwater rock calls “Richeliu”. Although it is not in the park boundary, it is one of the most important diving sites. At present it is in the flora and fauna protected area of the Department of Fisheries. Catching marine animals in the area is not allowed.
