New Friends Under the Sea
Coral reef in deep water at Mu Ko Similan is the area the most diverse animals are found in Thailand. Many species are the first report of Andaman Sea like an Andaman sea slug. Some are found only in this area, no report from other areas in Thai Sea like a Mauritius scorpionfish. Some are found very difficult in other areas, but easily found in the sea of Similan like a Clown triggerfish and Treespots angelfish.
If you’d like to enjoy diving here, you should prepare yourself very well by finding an marine animal guidebook, dividing the interesting animals into groups like shrimps, shells, crabs, and fishes, then examining the pictures before diving. When coming back, open the book again.
Mauritius Scorpionfish (Rhinopias eschmeyeri )
A Mauritius scorpionfish is one of stonefish family, but very difficult to find. It has been reported only at Mauritius archipelago near Africa continent. But the surveyor team from the Department of Fisheries, Kasetsart University, found this fish at the northern side of Ko Hok in 1998. It is the first report of Thailand and it is found only at that place. This fish camouflages itself still on the floor, and moves by using its pectoral fins push its body. It lives at the depth of 10-20 meters along the floor of stone and seaweed.
