New Friends On Land

The Royal Forestry Department has surveyed Similan in 1992 and reported that there are 27 species of mammals, all are small animals such as bats, Crab-eating macaques, langurs, squirrels, porcupines, and civets; 4 species of amphibians ; 22 species of reptiles such as chameleons, snakes, including Indian monitors and Water monitors which are generally found on the beach.

The interesting things are those wild birds. The survey found 39 species of resident birds such as Brahminy kites, White-breasted waterhens; migratory birds such as Pintail snipes and wagtails; resident and migratory birds such as Cattle egrets and Watercocks.

Nicobar Pigeon For the bird-watchers, everybody knows that Similan is the habitat of Nicobar pigeons, the bird that is difficult to find. In summer, it usually comes down to eat wild sapodilla fruits on the floor in front of the Park Headquarters.
