Dangers on Islands
There is an old saying that danger is always near you. You may go out diving the whole day with a lot of fun, but are stung by a centipede in your sleeping bag or bit by a snake in your tent. Here are some suggestions.
- On beaches in Thailand, even in distant islands, there may be chips of glasses or woods with nails, light bulbs from boats or lids of beer bottles. Always be careful when stepping on a beach.
- Insects or snakes may come under your clothes or stuffy places. Sometimes they may hide in your shoes. So always check them out, do not neglect.
When you walk into a forest, remember that a snake and a twig are very similar. There have been people stepping on snakes so many times, and it took many hours before getting to a hospital. Always use a torch; do not use the moonlight. Have a twig in your hand to scratch some places that you are not sure.
- If you walk into the water near shores, be careful of chips of corals, barnacles and oysters. Do not look over small stingrays that always bury themselves in the sand floor in shallow water. Try to take a short step.
- Do not leave your dessert or sweets unprotected before coming back to eat. Once we have found a cockroach lying smilingly in a tin of sweetened condensed milk. The problem is we found it when we have already eaten all of the milk. Always keep everything clean.
- In many islands, there are a lot of mosquitoes. Some islands are near the border where there may be problems of contagious diseases like malaria and hemorrhagic fever. Always prepare the insect repellent or sometimes you may have to take a malaria-preventing drug.
