STING RAY’S LIFE
SOURCES OF DOCUMENTARY
Once in a long time I have an opportunity to write about large creature that everybody would be shocked, awed and screaming when he see it.
Documentaries about shrimp...snail...small fish...are for study. Although they are challenging, they lack of one thing – feeling of those who have seen.
When I wrote a story about manta ray I chose to let feeling lead scientific knowledge. I believe that those who are interested can obtain information from many books. There might be a few times when scientists describe the feelings of manta and a man confronting the largest ray in the world. For documentary with more than one hundred twenty thousand bahts investment, this writing style is a high risk. But I was willing to do because I wanted to share the same moment with my readers.
Thanks to the Editor who has never paid attention to the cost in producing one documentary. Thanks to Dive Master for kindness. Thanks to everyone in Sea Papa team for efforts. Thanks to khun Nut Sumontamae for extra knowledge. Thanks to khun Vinij Rung-Paung for camera battery fifty miles offshore. I can always believe in kindness of the Thais.
Above all...thanks to providence...to let us meet her in the middle of the sea...to be able to produce one important documentary in our lives.
Documentary about manta ray...Document that I had not even dared dreaming of...But completed today.
EXPLAINATION
Manta Ray
Mainly Thai divers call her “manta”.
Her
This Manta Ray was female. We noticed that she had no clasper.
Previously spotted place
Khun Nat remembered the print on her body. He met her once at Tachai Island.
Macro lens
Used to take photograph of small objects. Taking photo of manta ray with macro lens is like looking at the elephant through a microscope.
Wide angle lens
Suitable for taking photo of large object. We use zoom lens 20-35 mm.
Fish eye lens
Special lens that is capable of taking photograph of even wider area. We use 13 mm.
Manta delivers cub in the air, uterine milk, respiration
I studied from the text.
Manta and first aid at Tachai Island
Khun Nat told me
Others, including Manta’s cleverness
I found out from experience.
