STING RAY’S LIFE

HER (3)

She swam quicker when the goal was not far away. During the past several years, she came in to visit the coast from time to time. At the beginning she came to Hua-bon Island - “Manta meeting point” of all divers. But when the bomb sound started to blast, she came in and found nothing. Many times, her cleaner wrasse had vanished...gone with the coral reef that crumpled down, flat.

She moved her relaxing spot, swimming to the middle of the sea to Tachai Island. Over there, she used to lie still, letting the cleaner wrasse nibbling parasites on her body. There, she used to swim with large group of divers, before the fishing boats came in. Light from floating lamps shone brightly every night, luring small fish to come around and larger fish to follow, looking for food. Every life was scooped up the boat in one go, leaving only empty coral reef.

Was it against the law? It was...So? When fishermen wanted to do, arresting according to the law was only a joke, written to make those who know the truth laugh. The law still exists whereas fishing in the National Park still continues...Go on! Clear up the whole sea...Money today is more important...Leave the future of younger generation aside.

Manta does not like the empty sea without any creatures. She does not know what to gain from the coral reef, which used to be the most fertile spot in the Andaman Sea. Today, there remains but fractions of corals. A few fish popping up their faces, waiting to be caught and become fish- meal.

She headed north, from Tachai to Surin Island. That sea was still fertile. But the coral reef was in shallow water. She did not want to go near it. She wanted coral reef in the middle of the open sea. Manta kept on swimming.

She went into the Burmese Sea. On dry land, the country may face with political and economic problems. But under water, natural resource is still in perfect condition.

         She found a new home...
